What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is likely the world’s most practiced martial art. The word Taekwondo (also Tae Kwon Do, Taekwon-do, 태권도) means “Foot Fist Way,” or more loosely, “the way of the fist and foot.”

Traditionally, Taekwondo as a martial art uses strikes and blocks with the hands, elbows, and knees, and places strong emphasis on kicking in both offense and defense.

Taekwondo is the national sport of South Korea and Taekwondo sparring is an official medal event of the Olympic Summer Games.

Kukkiwon Taekwondo

We teach Kukkiwon Taekwondo as a complete martial art. The sport side of Taekwondo is far more popular, recognized, and practiced. It is a useful part of training too, but it’s only one part of the complete martial art curriculum.

Our school, founded in 1959, practiced Taekwondo long before its inclusion in the Olympics (1988 or 2000 if you’re being pedantic) back when Americans called it “Korean Karate”.
